U.S. Navy Challenge Coins
The Navy challenge coin has been a tradition for decades. Thought to originate in the Army Air Corps during World War I, challenge coins have come to represent pride and camaraderie in 1000's of military and non-military organizations.
Each Navy challenge coin is printed with the emblem of either the USN or of one of its units or divisions. As with other branches, custom holds that the recipient of a Navy challenge coin carry it with them at all times. When "challenged", one must produce their Navy coin immediately – or else buy a round of drinks for the challenger and for others who present their coins.
Today, Navy challenge coins are frequently awarded to USN personnel upon entering a specific unit. Navy challenge coins are also used to commemorate special occasions, or simply to serve as a reminder of one's service.
