U.S. Coast Guard Challenge Coins
The Coast Guard challenge coin has been a tradition for decades. Thought to originate in the Army Air Corps during World War I, challenge coins have come to represent pride and camaraderie in 1000's of military and non-military organizations.
Each Coast Guard challenge coin is printed with the emblem of either the USCG or of one of its units or divisions. As with other branches, custom holds that the recipient of a Coast Guard challenge coin carry it with them at all times. When "challenged", one must produce their Coast Guard coin immediately – or else buy a round of drinks for the challenger and for others who present their coins.
Today, Coast Guard challenge coins are frequently awarded to USCG personnel upon entering a specific unit. Coast Guard challenge coins are also used to commemorate special occasions, or simply to serve as a reminder of one's service.
